Green Janitors: Yabatech student, turns disposable waste to ottoman.

An  HND 2  Student of Yaba College of Technology, Adeyemi Adesumbo, from the department of Environmental Biology have turned a waste wood into a stool ottoman, after been trained at the Up Cycling Training organized on the 18th March, 2021  by Green Janitors Sustainable Initiative in commemoration of Global Recycling Day 2021.

This was exhibited as an individual project after the training. The trainees were asked to present a self practical work and within 12 hour's, Adesumbo came up with a neat up cycled wood ottoman.

The Green janitors is a Non Governmental Organization, headed by Ashade Abdsalam. They are youth environmental allies that show up wherever they suspect danger for the environment: they protests against atomic testing, climate change, pollution on the high seas, toxic waste transports and they render voluntary janitorial cleaning .

It has the mission to reduce plastic pollution, advocate for a circular economy and sustainable environment through recycling and waste up cycling.

Through their vision, they stand to achieve an enabling environment that is sustainable through waste management.

Their core objectives have always been to  create an optimal business environment for sustainable growth, job creation and innovations through recycling of environmental, industrial, climate and energy waste. And no wonder it's not a surprise, seeing Adesumbo come with such an innovation.

The Green janitors, focuses on thematic areas such as: sustainable environment, youth empowerment, innovation, janitorial services, circular economy, education, health and community development.

So far, Green Janitors, have engaged in some projects such as:Picking the Plastic Project, which is usually done in communities. Towns like Obalende, Oshodi, Badagry have all enjoyed this.

Also, they engage in Campus Recycling. It is a concept that makes them visit university  campuses and help clean the environment and carry out other duties within their folds. The likes of LASU, UNILAG, Federal University of Technology Akure, (FUTA,) Yabatech, Laspotech, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) and more have been beneficiaries of this.

They engage in Champions Beyond Recycling, by making sure, the youth who also do the recycled work make earnings from it. This has saw them raised many youth beyond their economic threshold.

Their Youth4Nature, idea us a concept that sees Youth become friends to their environment and engage in activities that could make the environment become more habitable for man. This re-echoes their slogan, which says " ....Allies of the environment."

To the Green Janitors,  nothing is a waste until it is totally wasted. This has saw them carve out several meaningful ideas from recycled waste, as can be seen here.

Speaking with The Social Watch, on how far this initiative has gone, the boss Ashade Abdsalam, said that: " It has gone beyond our expectation as we have both state, national and international recognition because our focus is a global concern and as such it draws more attention than we have ever imagined. For example, the Climate Change has been a major concern for the world on how to mitigate and adapt to it. Through one of our project Youth4Nature, we are already making innovative ideas on how to tackle climate action by making sure youths get involve."

"In the course of our work, we have received some awards of recognition and honour in our names. They are: Best Use for Social Media for Social Good. Recycling Heroes Award. Environmental Ambassador of the year." The boss said

The body works with passionate volunteers across tertiary institutions, who get trained on sensitization activities on proper waste disposal and distribution of free waste bins.

Green Janitors engage in monthly clean up program to make the environment sustainable.
